The dream and purpose of Refugees and Partners is to connect the refugee women who visit Zara’s House to the cultures, services and opportunities within the Australian community.
In recent times, refugees have come to Newcastle with their families from Afghanistan, Iran, Eritrea, DR Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda and West Africa – most recently from Syria and Iraq.
What a wealth of diversity in culture they bring to build Australia further as a wonderful multicultural society.
Many of the women struggle to learn English.
They find mainstream employment closed to them.
Family responsibilities, cultural differences and lack of formal education after years in refugee camps are barriers to formal education, jobs and home ownership.
The women bring MANY WORLD CLASS TALENTS AND TRADITIONAL HANDCRAFT SKILLS.
They bring skills such as weaving, making furnishings, accessories and sewing high fashion “modest” garments which are massive industries world wide.
With local partners contributing technology and business skills, it is THE DREAM of Refugees and Partners to help these women find purpose in life, personal fulfillment, and hopefully to achieve financial independence.
