Grandmothers Against the Detention of Refugee Children is a group of grannnies, their relatives and friends who protest visibly against Australia’s unjust policy of holding refugee children and their families for indefinite detention. To draw attention to their protest, the Grandmothers hold a vigil every Thursday from 5.00 to 6.00pm on the corner of Hunter and Auckland Streets, in front of the office of Sharon Claydon MP, the federal member for Newcastle.
The vigil is also attended by other groups opposing offshore detention of asylum seekers. Their campaign – #BringThemHere, calls on the Australian Government to give them shelter, a chance to start a new life free from persecution, in a country where children can get an education rather than be robbed of childhood and where adults can contribute to society and bring their skills to this country of migrants. Fellow Australian who share these values and desires are welcome to join the weekly gathering.
